BioLumic’s low emissions pasture progresses to New Zealand field trials

19 December 2025

Jason Wargent, BioLumic’s Founder and Chief Science Officer, shares more about the technology with our Farmer Focus Group.

The NZ-founded company has recently demonstrated proof of concept, with its unique light signalling technology increasing the lipid concentration of ryegrass to 5.5 per cent.

By increasing the fat content of ryegrass, BioLumic aims to reduce methane emissions from animals that consume it.

The company is also exploring adding productivity traits to ryegrass, to improve feed efficiency and milk solids production.

This recent progress has unlocked a milestone payment, part of our NZ $5 million investment announced last year, which will help fund field trials.

The pilot field trials will test grass composition, productivity and methane reduction potential – an exciting next step in BioLumic’s journey to providing New Zealand farmers with an effective emissions reduction tool in 2027.
